July 2025 at Bacoa: Summer Programs, Team Spotlight & Ways to Get Involved

A NOTE FROM BACOA’S DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR
As Bacoa’s new Development Director, I’m honored to be part of a team and a mission that puts people at the heart of everything we do. In just a short time, I’ve already seen what makes Bacoa truly special: its people. As we dive into the heart of summer, I’m reminded of the powerful connections that bring our mission to life every day. Whether it’s volunteers delivering meals, staff guiding families through Medicare/Medicaid decisions, or community partners helping host unforgettable outings. Bacoa thrives because of the dedicated individuals who show up every day to make it all possible.

Meet the Bacoa Team
Seeing our team together reminds me just how lucky I am to work alongside such a passionate, experienced, and compassionate group of people. Whether they’re coordinating transportation, assisting with Medicare and Medicaid, supporting caregivers, managing programs, or welcoming guests with a smile, each staff member brings a sense of purpose and dedication that makes Bacoa what it is. Thank you to our incredible team—you lead with heart, and it shows.

Montessori Meets Memory Care

Activities will include reading circles, art, and drum circles, with the first session scheduled for Thursday, July 17th from 1–2 PM.
We’re excited to introduce a new monthly experience to the day program in partnership with Tom and Karen Brenner, nationally recognized dementia care educators. Tom, a gerontologist, and Karen, a Montessori expert, will lead activities rooted in their groundbreaking approach: the Montessori Method for Dementia. This method centers around dignity, independence, and meaningful engagement, helping individuals reconnect with their world through sensory-rich programming.

Volunteer Spotlight

A heartfelt thank you to the 200+ individuals who power Bacoa’s work behind the scenes. Whether delivering meals, assisting with programs, lending a listening ear, or offering a warm smile—your time and compassion brings our mission to life every single day.
This month, we’re especially proud to shine a light on the young volunteers who have stepped up this summer to support our work. These remarkable individuals chose to spend part of their break giving back—not because they had to, but because they wanted to. Their energy, empathy, and generosity are a powerful reminder that service knows no age.
At Bacoa, we believe that the strength of a community is measured by how it cares for its elders. When younger generations get involved early— whether by sharing stories, helping with activities, or simply showing up— they begin to build lifelong habits of compassion, responsibility, and respect. And in doing so, they help create a more connected, caring, and age-inclusive community for years to come.
Volunteering isn’t just about what you give—it’s about what you gain.
A chance to make someone feel seen. A moment of shared laughter. A connection that spans decades. For our youth, volunteering at Bacoa offers a front-row seat to the wisdom, resilience, and humanity of our older neighbors—and a way to actively shape the kind of community they’ll one day inherit.
Know a student or young adult looking to make a difference?
Encourage them to get involved. Bacoa is always welcoming new volunteers of all ages—especially those ready to lead with heart and help shape a brighter, more compassionate future for all.
Pizza, stories, and connection all served with a smile.

Our latest Cuisine Club outing took us to Georgio’s, where laughter filled the air and unforgettable stories were shared over slices of delicious pizza. From a retired Colonel who served 27 years and toured in Iraq, to former business owners, entertainers, and everyday neighbors with rich life experiences, the table was full of wisdom, warmth, and community.
Bacoa’s Cuisine Club is more than a monthly lunch, it’s a chance to stay connected, share memories, and enjoy great food with great people. We’re grateful to the team at Georgio’s Pizza for their hospitality and support in helping us create moments like this.

A Perfect Day on the Water

It was the perfect day for a summer escape to Lake Geneva! Our group set sail aboard the Grande Belle, soaking up the sunshine, fresh lake breeze, and beautiful shoreline views. From laughter on the upper deck to great conversations below, the cruise offered a peaceful break and a chance to enjoy time together outside the everyday routine.
Moments like these remind us how important connection, fresh air, and a little adventure can be—no matter the age. A big thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the day so memorable!
Up next? We’re headed to the Chicago Botanic Garden on Wednesday, July 31, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Stroll through blooming gardens, enjoy live music, hop on the tram, or explore at your own pace—then we’ll head out for a fun group lunch.
