Volunteer Opportunities

We depend on our volunteers to help us achieve our mission. At BACOA, we have many different ways to serve seniors and the community, so we welcome your time and energy in support of our efforts. Whether you can commit a few hours a month or a few hours a week, BACOA has opportunities for enthusiastic volunteers of all ages. Please give us a call today at (847) 381-5030 or e-mail us at info@bacoa.org.

Our volunteer opportunities include:

The Senior Lunch and Activity Program

BACOA, in coordination with Catholic Charities of Lake County, offers lunch programs three times a week for seniors. A hot noonday meal is provided at the Barrington Park District on Monday and at Greencastle of Barrington on Thursday. The program's activities include bingo, music and presentations on health and nutrition. Volunteers serve lunch, prepare and clean up table and kitchen areas, and check in program participants.

Meals with Wheels

Volunteer drivers deliver a healthy, hot noon meal to persons who are unable to shop or prepare their own meals. The meals, prepared under the supervision of a registered dietitian, are delivered Monday through Friday.

Volunteer drivers

Volunteers will drive seniors to the grocery store, pharmacy or to personal care appointments.

Home maintenance

Seniors can often use a helping hand with home maintenance work such as yard work, removing snow or minor home repairs. Volunteers can provide help on an occasional basis or commit to a regular visit.

Office volunteers

Volunteers can work at BACOA's office, assisting with answering phones, computer work and special mailings. One day per month is required.

The Friendly Visitor Program

This program matches seniors with a volunteer who visits on a weekly basis. The visit may include help writing letters, shopping, running errands, or simply a cordial visit and conversation.

The Adopt-a-Grandparent Program

Seniors are paired with Barrington High School students. Regular visits help create friendships while giving both generations a chance to learn from each other.

Requirements

Since volunteers will be working with vulnerable and frail seniors, as well as high school students, all positions require:

  • A completed volunteer application
  • Three letters of reference
  • An interview with the volunteer and program coordinators
  • Criminal background and drivers license checks and proof of auto insurance (for volunteer drivers).
