Dementia-Related Support Groups

 

Alzheimer's Association Support Group

The Alzheimer's Association Support Group provides education, speakers and support for families and caregivers of Alzheimer's patients.

September: Thursday, September 9; 1:30-3

Jo Letwaitis  will discuss the Validation Method of communicating with dementia patients. This state-of-the-art therapy is recognized throughout the world for its effectiveness with people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s-type dementia.

October: Thursday, October 14; 1:30-3

Open forum to discuss issues related to Alzheimer's.

The group meets the second Thursday of every month. There is no fee to participate, but we ask that first-time participants call to register. For more information, call Bonnie at (847) 852-3890.

 

Early-stage Memory Loss Group.

BACOA, in partnership with the Alzheimer's Association and Barrington Youth and Family Services, offers a support group for people experiencing early memory loss and for their family members or partners. The program meets for 10 weekly sessions and covers pertinent topics, including an overview of early-stage memory loss, medical information, legal and financial planning, social and family relationships, driving and other considerations. Charge for this program is $50 per couple; $35 for an individual; however, scholarships are available for anyone who is unable to pay.

Young Onset Dementia Support and Education Group

BACOA will begin a Young Onset Dementia Support and Education Group in September. The program is open to people who were diagnosed with dementia before the age of 65 and are in the early stages of memory loss/dementia; it will also be open to their family members or partners who are interested in attending a support and education group.   

     The group will meet once a month from 7-9 p.m. and will discuss pertinent topics, including an overview of early-stage memory loss, medical information, legal and financial planning, loss of employment, social and family relationships, driving and other considerations.
