Services
BACOA offers guidance on resources and services available to seniors and their caregivers. These include:
Elder care concerns
- Resources to make a senior's living situation safe and comfortable. BACOA can provide information and counsel on in-home home care services, emergency response systems, and housing options, including rental retirement, assisted living and skilled nursing facilities. BACOA staff can also make home visits to assess seniors' needs and help link them to appropriate services.
- The Barrington Area Meals with Wheels program, which delivers a healthy, hot noon meal. Meals are available Monday through Friday to persons who are unable to shop or prepare their own meals.
- BACOA's Friendly Visitor program, which pairs seniors with a volunteer who visits on a weekly basis.
- Information on transportation services, including PACE Dial-a-Ride, FISH, taxi subsidies and hospital transportation service.
- BACOA offers memory screenings to promote early detection and intervention for those concerned about memory loss. The screenings consist of a series of questions and tasks designed to test memory, language skills, thinking ability, and other intellectual functions. Each screening takes about 10-15 minutes. For more information, call Bonnie at BACOA at (847) 852-3890.
Financial, insurance and benefits questions
BACOA staff, as well as volunteers from the Senior Health Insurance Program, can answer questions related to:
- Medicare—including Part D—and Medicare supplements.
- Prescription drug assistance
- Retiree health plans
- Claims processing
- Long-term care
- Home energy assistance
- AARP Income Tax Assistance Program. BACOA will offer the AARP Income Tax Assistance Program from February 7-April 12. Trained AARP volunteers will assist seniors with their income taxes at the BACOA office. Appointments will be available on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, and assistance is by appointment only. Details.
- BACOA can file applications for the Illinois Department on Aging's Circuit Breaker program. This program provides relief from property and mobile home taxes, rent or nursing home charges; it also provides assistance in paying for designated prescription medications through Illinois Cares Rx; and offers a vehicle license discount. For eligibility requirements, see the Circuit Breaker Web site. To make an appointment, call BACOA at (847) 381-5030.
Please note: As of September 1, 2011, there are two different eligibility income levels: one for Illinois Cares Rx and one for Circuit Breaker and the Ride Free Programs for Seniors and People with Disabilities. Because of Illinois state budget reductions, funding for the Illinois Cares Rx program has been reduced, and income levels to qualify for the program have been reduced. Qualifying income levels for Circuit Breaker will remain the same, but as of September 1, only seniors who qualify for the Circuit Breaker program will be eligible to receive an RTA Senior Circuit Ride Free permit. All other seniors will be eligible for an RTA Reduced Fare permit. Click for details.
